Lesson Plans
PoetryTo the right, you will see a lesson on John Donne's The Flea I created to make classical poetry more accessible to students and add more creativity to the classroom, two things I find very important. This lesson includes a power point and worksheet which are also available in this section. Upon reflection of this lesson I realized I needed more background knowledge on metaphysical poetry and a more comprehensive review of the worksheet. I have added these changes to the lesson and realize that it might be too much for one day, I would have to teach this lesson to a high school students to be sure.
Perspective in WritingThe goal of this lesson was to teach students to create 'voice' in their writing. It was one of my many co-taught lessons, we had a limit of 20 minutes when we taught the lesson to our class but for the purposes of our careers we planned out a 50 minute lesson plan. This also allowed us to practice being flexible, accommodating, and to suss out what was really at the heart of our lesson. It turned out that what we wanted our students to realize most was that they put their voice in their writing all the time- they just need to be aware of what it means to do it intentionally!
Reading Strategies
Here you will find a lesson plan on reading strategies. This lesson is on a mix of a few different reading strategies (visualizing, annotation, and a little pair and share) in order to help students get at the deeper meaning in this poem. It is crucial that while keeping classics alive, students become educated on modern poets so I had the students learning how to use good reading strategies on a modern poem, Dear Miss Emily by James Galvin.
Feminism and "I Stand Here Ironing"I think that people become English teachers because they love literature and they hope to pass that love on. This is one of those stories that I love. A mother racked with guilt over her poor parenting in a world where realistically she had no other options. A story that struggling learners can easily see themselves reflected in and a message that both empowers women while keeping them down. It is rare that students share the same passion about literature as their teachers however, as long as their teachers are engaged the students will be as well.
Grammar LessonWith my experiences with ELL students I have found that the grammar that comes easily to native speakers tends to be more difficult for ELLs. To solve this problem we broke down our lesson on Modal verbs, into a single days lesson on "will" and "be going to" and then implied a larger modal verb unit to follow. My partner, Madelyn and I created this lesson plan together from our grammar text books and experiences in ESL and ELL classrooms.
Service LearningService learning is part of a raising student awareness about the world, separate from community service, that is meant to get students involved in learning an active in their own learning. Not only does making students aware of current events matter in education but having students create viable solutions and make connections with their learning and the world is priceless.
