Curriculum Map
This conceptual curriculum map is a rough outline of my dream curriculum map for the year- I chose an honors American studies class. We were not required to fill out the unit SWBAT's or to make up the units and the lesson plans. The great thing about this is it got us thinking about the bigger picture. We also spent time working through the standards for the grade we chose to teach and rewording them to make them clearer to us and our students.
We revisited this assignment at the end of the year and added vocabulary activities all the way through our plan. Though I discovered I had planed more units than I would ever teach, I also discovered I still stood by the idea of integrating so-called 'diverse' literature into a regular American studies course so that the 'America' students study would start to reflect the 'America' students see around them.

Touching Spirit Bear Rationale Memo
As part of being a professional educator teachers must learn to lobby in the best interests of their students. This memo was written to a fictional school board and administration in order to convince them to teach the novel, Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen, the novel is a coming of age tale that is meant to foster multicultural understanding albeit a bit violently. My group pointed out the benefits of the books take on community as a great start of the year novel (since it is not a hard read), avoiding the stigma of 'multicultural units' and still hitting over nine standards for the required ninth grade. I was most excited about the book as a novel that students would enjoy reading and a way to get students interested in some of the concepts of English education without dragging them through the same old material.
